Characteristics and condition of Tsumugi | Used and recycled kimonos
Kumejima Tsumugi was designated an Important Intangible Cultural Property of Japan in 2004.
This traditional textile is woven on an island floating in a coral reef sea 100 km west of the main island of Okinawa, making use of the island's abundant natural blessings.
Traditional techniques are still preserved, and the unique feature is that one person carries out all the processes from designing, dyeing, tying the kasuri pattern, dyeing the threads, to weaving. Each bolt of cloth reflects the personality of the maker, giving it a soothing flavor.
The Kumejima Tsumugi Business Cooperative was established in 1970, and the entire island has come together to work hard to train successors to pass on the techniques of Kumejima Tsumugi to future generations.
You can enjoy a wide range of obi including half-width obi, Nagoya obi, and fukuro obi.
There are some small stains on the lining, but it is still perfectly usable as a reusable item.
The colour is closest to what you see in the overall photo, but it may vary slightly depending on the device you are using.
