This is a bolt of Awa Shijira fabric, an intangible cultural property of Tokushima Prefecture. The material is 100% cotton.
It is a plain dark navy blue (fusubeiro) (see the Definitive Japanese Color Dictionary), but it is woven in a way that creates faint vertical lines, giving it a clean look.
Awa Shijira weave is a fabric characterized by its embossed texture, and has a similar feel to the seersucker fabric used in clothing.
It has an uneven surface, does not stick to the skin, and is light and breathable, making it a popular summer kimono.
It basically falls into the category of summer kimono, but since it is not see-through, it can also be worn as a single-layer kimono, and it is also recommended to wear it as a yukata without an undergarment during the height of summer.
It can be worn for a long period of time and can be cared for by hand washing just like cotton kimonos, or by putting it in a laundry net and washing it on hand wash mode, so it's sure to become a very popular everyday kimono!
When wearing it as a yukata, it should be paired with a half-width obi or heko obi. Also, when wearing it as a kimono, we recommend pairing this pattern with a Nagoya obi, tied in a Taiko knot or a Tsunodashi knot, for a stylish look.
This is an untailored bolt of cloth, so it is in excellent condition and can be reused.
