Fukuro Obi Features and Condition | Used and Recycled Fukuro Obi
This is a tatenishiki (weft-faced brocade) fukuro obi, perfect for semi-formal attire.
It is reversible, with one side featuring a pattern of abundance woven onto a strong white-gray background (ash white, referring to a dictionary of traditional Japanese colors), and the other side featuring a tatewaku (rising steam) pattern woven onto horizontal stripes of pale purple, yellow, and gray.
Tatenishiki is known for its smooth vertical drape and minimal horizontal movement. This means it's easy to tighten and, once tied, less prone to shifting, making it a highly valued obi among kimono enthusiasts.
This obi was crafted by Ori Koubou Kanae, a manufacturer in Kyoto's Nishijin district that primarily produces tatenishiki obis.
Kanae believes that thread quality determines product quality, so they use 100% A5-grade Brattak silk thread for the warp, which is lauded as the world's finest silk thread.
One of the characteristics of tatenishiki is that its beautiful patterns and colors appear not only on the front but also on the back.
Furthermore, since no threads run across the back, the fabric remains smooth, allowing one to enjoy the inherent texture and luster of silk.
It is light because it does not use pictorial weft threads (weft threads that create patterns), and its warp-faced structure makes it easy to tie and resistant to wrinkles.
This refined and elegant tatenishiki can be enjoyed in various settings, from traditional tea ceremonies to modern kimono scenes, blending seamlessly into contemporary life.
Please wear it with a wide range of kimonos, such as stylish houmongi, tsukesage, iromuji, komon, and tsumugi.
No stains or dirt are visible, making this a well-maintained recycled item.
