What to look for when choosing recycled kimonos online? Tips on choosing the right size and how to adjust it

Hello, this is Yukinuwa.

As we do not have a physical store and only sell recycled kimonos online, it is important for customers to check the size of the kimono themselves. This time, we will tell you the points to consider when choosing a kimono for those who dress themselves.

What are the three basic measurements that are important when choosing a kimono size?

  • height
  • Hip size
  • Arm length (sleeve length)

See our How to Measure Guide for more information.

On our product pages, the dimensions are listed under the product images as "Product Information", so please check them before making your selection.

Tips for choosing a kimono that doesn't suit you

It's great if you can find a kimono that fits you perfectly, but sometimes the kimono you like doesn't fit your size. Here's what to do in such a case.

Reasons why you should avoid kimonos with insufficient width

A kimono that is too narrow is a no-no. It will come undone when you sit down, or flip up every time you walk, making it uncomfortable to wear. On the other hand, if the width is too wide, you can adjust it depending on how you put it on, but ideally it should be within 5cm wider.

Tips for wearing a kimono that doesn't fit your height

It's okay if the length is within ±5cm of your height, but if you really want the kimono, it's okay to make it +10cm. In that case, you can make fine adjustments by using two waist strings. Tie one at the normal position and the other at a higher position to adjust the hem.

If it is too short, you can wear it at the same length as a man without making a hem. In this case, the length should be the length of your undergarment + 10cm. Hiding the hem in the obi will prevent the kimono from coming undone. It is also recommended to wear boots on your feet to enjoy a shorter length.

What to do when your sleeve length is too short | How to use arm covers

Sleeve length affects the appearance of the kimono, and is difficult to adjust when dressing. If it is too long, it should not reach the base of your thumb. If it is too short, use arm covers. They provide shade in the summer and protection from the cold in the winter, and can also be used as an accent for your outfit.

These methods may differ from traditional ways of dressing, but try incorporating them as a way to "wear the kimono you want to wear."

Feel free to try it out with recycled or casual kimonos

For beginners, we recommend casual kimonos and recycled kimonos. Designs with lots of small patterns, such as solid colors, geometric patterns, and small patterns, are easy to incorporate and can be easily devised.

Recycled kimonos are reasonably priced, so why not try out a variety of styles?
