Characteristics and condition of Homongi and Tsukesage | Second-hand and recycled kimonos
This product is a formal kimono decorated with Saga Nishiki, which is now a very rare fabric, and can be worn for formal occasions such as ceremonies and parties.
Saga Nishiki is a type of Nishiki woven using thin strips of gold and silver leaf or lacquered Japanese paper as the warp threads and dyed silk threads as the weft.
It all began when the wife of the 9th lord of the Nabeshima clan of the Kashima domain was inspired by wickerwork ceilings and asked her aides if she could use them to make everyday items. In the early Meiji period, production of Saga Nishiki was temporarily suspended, but it was revived among the former aristocracy after Saga Prefecture native Okuma Shigenobu lamented its loss. Later, at the 1910 Japan-British Exhibition held in London, Okuma arranged for what was previously known as Kumi-nishiki and Kashima-nishiki to be exhibited under the name Saga Nishiki. This was praised as "the pinnacle of Japanese handicrafts," and led to its fame spreading overseas.
The kimono is made of Saga Nishiki fabric cut and layered into a floral pattern on a pink (cherry blossom color) (see the Definitive Japanese Color Dictionary) background, making it a simple yet very elegant kimono.
Pairing it with a gold or cream-colored obi will create a soft and gentle look, while a silver or slightly darker colored obi will create a cool look.
There are no stains or dirt, and it is perfectly wearable as a reused item.
The colour is closest to what you see in the overall photo, but it may vary slightly depending on the device you are using.
